The Global Power Grid Solution

Dear GENI Friend,

http://www.esa.int/gsp/ACT/images/nrg/earth_night.jpgWe are thrilled to share the attached article from IEEE Spectrum: "Let's Build a Global Power Grid" by Clark Gellings. I first met Mr. Gellings at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, where researchers find common solutions to problems for U.S. utilities. 20 years ago, scant attention was given to climate change and how renewable energy could mitigate it. Today it is different.

He states that "it's far more sensible to ... interconnect regional electricity networks to form a globe-spanning supergrid. The technology now exists to transmit massive amounts of electricity over long distances without significant losses ... allowing operators to balance 'loads' across an entire continent."

Dymaxion Map with Energy SuperGridEurope is an excellent example of interconnecting national energy grids across borders for mutual benefits:

  • Load leveling/sharing between utilities
  • Increased system reliability
  • Improved frequency and voltage control
  • Deferral of additional generation
  • Emergency options for system operators
  • Tapping of remote renewables

The engineers of the world always look to increase reliability, reduce cost and pollution effects.  "Let's Build a Global Grid" accelerates this vision on all continents. We are stronger together.  Please share this with your political leaders!
