Creating a Renewable Energy Roadmap:
4 Key Questions for Each Nation at COP22
Dear GENI Friend,
|Peter Meisen with 4 Key Questions|
Marrakech, Morocco is hosting the COP22 this month (the 22nd Committee of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention in Climate Change).
From last year's Paris Agreement and Treaty, each nation must now deliver a Clean Energy Roadmap. These are called Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) strategies – which collectively will attempt to limit the global temperature increase in 2050 at 2oC compared to pre-industrial levels.
There are 4 essential Key Questions for each nation:
- What is your current national electricity demand and projection in 2050?
- What is the Renewable Energy Potential of your nation and region? (both the technical and exploitable of solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass and ocean)
- What’s the existing electric grid capacity and needed upgrades to meet 2050 demand?
- What if the grid was interconnected with all your neighbor nations for 24/7 energy trade?
Three nations already get nearly 100% of their electricity from renewables: Iceland, Costa Rica and Norway. Six nations are over 70%: Canada, New Zealand, Brazil, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay. Every nation needs a detailed Renewable Energy Roadmap that includes detailed GIS mapping of optimal renewable energy resources.
We have no time to lose. CO2 concentrations have surpassed 400ppm and the hottest monthly temperatures are now being recorded with every successive month.
