GENI-us Letter 2018-02
Climate Change Is Here Now — What Can You Do?
Dear GENI Friend,
For two decades we have prodded policy-makers and utilities to develop renewable energy strategies. Whether they are state-owned or private utilities, energy providers have four primary goals:
- keep the lights on 24/7 (reliability)
- least cost to customers (economically)
- minimize emissions (sustainably)
- maximize return to shareholders (profits)
Meanwhile, the global Climate Change community meets annually to refine National Clean Energy Plans and Targets to reduce CO2 consumption in their nations. The Paris Climate Agreement and Marrakech Accords (COP22) garnered commitments by all nations -- except the U.S. which has pulled out under President Trump arguing it will hurt the economy.
Reality is now colliding with these pledges. The United Nations Environmental Program reports that "to date, we have failed." In many corners of the world, emissions have continued virtually unabated, raising questions about how countries, even well-intentioned ones, can make bolder promises down the line when they have so far been unable to follow through on their current ones.
The North County Climate Alliance recently invited me to present the GENI Iniatitive, and I was pleased since this community is very near to where I grew up.
Given all these facts and trends, I chose to face reality.
"Climate change is here now — What can you do?"
You can view this short presentation – and even more important is acting on the wealth of ideas and solutions that came from the guests that evening. We do know what to do! We must get busy and implement these strategies at home, in our own community and around our world.
